Democratization

Democratization can be described as the process of a country becoming a democracy, or improving and implementing democratic processes. Most consider that in order to be considered democratic, a country must choose its leaders through fair and competitive elections ensure basic civil liberties, respect for the rule of law, and a strong civil society.

Nepal has made several attempts at democracy, but true democratization has not occurred. The "democratic" periods in Nepal's history have been marked by massive corruption, political power plays, insurgency, and outright abolishment of parliament. Other than voting, the "democratic" governments have never respected the rule of law, the need of a strong civil society or protecting civil liberties. Through Reform Forums efforts in anti-corruption, transparency, and accountability, the hope is to provide the environment for the process of democratization, leading to a true and lasting democracy for Nepal.
